There are few things quite as delicious as a chocolate sandwich cookie, and no name is more synonymous with this cookie style than Oreo. With an ingredient list that includes things like high fructose corn syrup and artificial flavors, though, you’re probably better off leaving these on the shelf. Instead, make your own. It’s easier than you think.
In a bowl, you’ll want to whisk a cup of melted butter and ¾ of a cup of sugar together until they’re combined well. Whisk in a teaspoon of vanilla and 1 cup of melted semisweet chocolate chips. Add an egg. In a separate bowl, combine 1 ½ cups of flour, ¾ of a cup of cocoa powder, a teaspoon of salt, and ½ teaspoon of baking soda. Stir the two mixtures together. Give them an hour in the refrigerator to get firm. On a sheet of wax paper, shape it into a log. You want one long, smooth cylinder. Refrigerate at least two hours, rotating regularly so one side doesn’t flatten. Heat the oven to 325 degrees. Cut the dough into ¼ inch thick slices, then back for twenty minutes. You want them to be very firm to the touch when you actually pull them out. Remove to a cooling rack.
While you’re waiting on the cookies to cool, you want to mix the filling. Beat 1 stick of unsalted butter until it’s creamy. Add 1 2/3 cup of powdered sugar and 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Add in a tablespoon of milk and a pinch of salt. Beat until it’s smooth. Simply frost the underside of one cookie and stick it to another for classic Oreo flavor.
Regular Oreos are enough, but there are lots of things you can do to spice this recipe up for birthday parties, holidays, and other events. If you want to stay simple, just dye the filling with a bit of food coloring. You could go orange for Halloween, green or St. Patrick’s Day, or something similar. For a special birthday treat, mix some sprinkles in with that filling.
Want to make things a little more exciting still? Grab a cookie cutter. Instead of staying with the circular style Oreo, go with shapes that fit. Leaves for fall, flag shapes for Independence Day, and other small choices. You can even add details to the cookies with a toothpick if you want something really unique.
One final step you can take is to make this treat just a little more luscious. For the holidays, or any time you need something special, melt some white chocolate on the stove after your cookies have been assembled. Carefully dip each sandwich cookie into the white chocolate, pulling it out with a toothpick and allowing it to harden to make delicious chocolate covered Oreo cookies. You’ll have an unbelievable treat that people will ask for again and again.
Oreos are great, but the homemade version is always going to taste so much better. It’s probably better for your kids too, so get the mixer and a baking sheet and get started.
